Patches of dry area remain an eyesore for playgrounds, sports fields and lawns. Overseeding comes as a major solution to remove this problem. You have to be extremely careful while doing it since the health of the plants will be affected sometimes. If not done properly, it can have a negative impact on the turf by clogging up the space for growth and promoting fight for water and nutrients.

There are many advantages of overseeding. Through the process, in fact you are encouraging the growth of new shoots that would come up to cover the empty patches fast. You can also avoid digging up the whole turf and replanting the grass. It should also be remembered that in spite of your maximum care, the lawn would continuously dry up in patches throughout the year. But the procedure of overseeding helps a lot in keeping your lawn fresh and vigorous at all times. Apart from this, it would prevent the growth of weeds, thereby helping it to save your hard earned money, efforts, time etc required to eradicate them.

Before re-seeding, you need to mow your lawn to the lowest extent possible and remove every loose material. Raking up the lawn would help loosen the matted and dead shoots. You can do it yourself with a conventional rake if the lawn is small enough, but powered machines may be required in larger lawns. After raking, you need to spike the ground with a fork or aerator to remove compaction of the soil.

Once the raking is done, you have to add loam, compost, sand etc to the top of the lawn. The purpose of this is to straighten out any hollows in the turf and to promote adequate growth. In fact, the soil which is added would function as aerators and help in draining excess water easily. After this, add extra fertilizers in an even manner and water them down. You need to be extremely cautious while applying them since overdose of the chemical compounds can harm the lawn.

The process of sowing grass seeds starts now. It is proved that using a mixture of different lawn seeds work wonders than sowing a single type of grass. It should also be remembered to provide the seeds with required moisture to avoid them getting dried up.
